The case of a Portage man who shot a bull elk on Nov. 20, 2021, the opening day of deer hunting season, was finally resolved in Columbia County Circuit Court last month with a judgment ordering him to pay $10,543 in fines and court costs.
Chase Emerson Steinhoff, 26, of Portage, was sentenced to 18 months of probation and must retake a hunting education course. He must provide a DNA sample to the court and his hunting and trapping privileges were revoked for five years.
