Wisconsin has its own “Big Apple.” Applea city that deserves top marks for performing arts, shopping and dining. Surprised? Like many first-time visitors to this city, known as the “cultural heart” of 20 communities along the Fox River that have been designated the Fox Cities. It’s where big-city chic meets carefree charm.
The first day
14:00 – The first stop on the agenda is the visual arts, with a stop at The Trout Museum of Art. Don’t miss the third floor, which showcases the work of local artists. If you’re in the area after gloomy, check out the lightweight installation art exhibit that lights up the exterior of the building. There’s also Gallery of Feathers and Bones is located in a building known as The Draw, a fresh venue for local visual artists and musicians.
16:00 – Time to check in. Stay at the boutique CopperLeaf Boutique Hotel & Spa, which is artfully furnished with plush beds and robes and has the feel of a diminutive European inn. 18:00 – Make it a classic pizza night. Visit Cannova’s Pizzeria in Neenah, where the pizza sauce is made from an original family recipe.
19:00 – Keep it casual and grab a craft beer or gourmet soda at Stone Cellar Brewpub. The owners focus on local and sustainable when it comes to drinks and the menu. In the same building is Skyline Comedy Café, where the owners have a knack for booking live acts for large national acts.
Day two
9 am – If you’re in the mood for a made-from-scratch breakfast in an atmosphere full of smiles, then take a seat at SAP. Happy Bellies Bake Shop is committed to creating delicious breakfast treats with organic, gluten-free and vegan options.
10 am – Get ready to shop, because you’ll find artistic finds at every turn. A must-see is Urban Evolutions, where rustic, elegant furniture and fixtures are made from reclaimed materials. Visit the Eco Candle Company flagship store to shop for candles, hand-poured in Wisconsin and made with natural soy. Delicious doesn’t even begin to describe Wilmar Chocolates. To give you an idea of the temptation factor, they hand-craft 60,000 pecan turtles during the holidays alone. You can even order candy bars made specifically for your sweet tooth.
South – Opt for lunch with a view at Fratello’s Waterfront Restaurant. It’s right next to the Fox River Dam, which means running water and eagle sightings. Zuppas in Neenah is upscale urban cafe cuisine, and mac and cheese is just one of many main dishes on the menu.
1 pm – You’ll want to shout “bravo” the moment you step into the magnificent Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass in Neenah. The collection here remains true to its benefactor’s original passion for collecting art glass, with works ranging from highly intricate paperweights to stunning contemporary sculptures. Tip: The gift shop is worth a visit in itself, so get your holiday shopping in.
15:00 – Time for a relaxing break, like a spa visit. If you’re staying at CopperLeaf, the spa is conveniently tucked away on the lower level. Try a classic European facial for a attractive glow. Balance your mind, body and spirit with a Thai massage at Sunflower Spa. This fully clothed treatment combines massage with guided yoga poses.
17:00 – Enjoy cocktails at Déjà Vu Martini Lounge. There are almost 100 martinis on the menu. Cleo’s Cocktail Lounge is a place where locals like to go and where the holiday decorations last all year long.
18:00 – When it comes to fine dining, Carmella’s Italian Bistro is the toast of the town. Start with the insalata menu and leave room for a sweet bite from the dolci offering.
7:30 PM – The Performing Arts Center is a vivid venue, thanks to its deep community support. In addition to being home to the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra, the schedule is packed with Broadway musicals, plays, ballet, bands, comedians, choral festivals and more.
Day third
10am – Sunday’s entry ticket is a lethargic brunch at Houdini’s Escape Gastropub. It’s a plated brunch, and the menu includes three Bloody Marys that are loaded with items like cheese, sausage, fried avocado, and a truffle baguette.
11:00 AM – Before your Appleton escape comes to an end, be sure to visit the Castle History Museum. This former Masonic temple, largely untouched by time, is home to the Harry Houdini Magic Exhibition, as the magician grew up in the town.
