The Green Bay Packers know what their plans are for their right guard, but Matt LaFleur’s team has no interest in revealing those plans to the Philadelphia Eagles or anyone else before the season opener in Brazil on Friday.
“We have a plan,” LaFleur said Monday.
The truth is that the plan at right guard could be one of a few options: either Sean Rhyan starts, first-round pick Jordan Morgan, or the Packers rotate Rhyan and Morgan.
LaFleur said the right guard position remains competitive.
Rhyan has clearly taken a step forward in his development entering his third season, while Morgan was the favorite to start at right guard before suffering a shoulder injury in training camp. Rhyan is listed as a starter on the team’s unofficial depth chart.
Last year, the Packers started Jon Runyan Jr. at right guard but eventually switched to a Runyan-Rhyan rotation that yielded mixed results. The rotation, however, gave Rhyan valuable experience.
LaFleur said Morgan, who didn’t play in the preseason, looked good over the past two days of practice and he consistently praised the training camp put together by Rhyan, who played 123 snaps last year and is now in much better physical shape heading into 2024.
Rhyan will likely start and play the majority of the snaps. Morgan missed too much time in training camp, and the Packers likely have little interest in shipping their first-round pick to the Wolves along the Eagles’ defensive front without getting their feet saturated first. But a rotation makes sense, too, especially if the Packers believe Morgan is ready and want to give him some much-needed experience as an opener.
The remaining four offensive line positions are set before Week 1: Rasheed Walker at left quarterback, Elgton Jenkins at left guard, Josh Myers at center and Zach Tom at right quarterback. The right guard conundrum remains unsolved, but the answer will come in four days.
