Milwaukee Brewers: Tom Verducci reveals cost of team’s mysterious pitching lab

Whether a player is drafted by them or acquired from an outside organization, they have a top-secret, mysterious pitching lab that gets a lot of credit for its success. Recently, Sports Illustrated senior writer Tom Verducci revealed how much that lab cost the Brew Crew.

The Brewers pitching lab is located in Arizona at their Spring Training facility. Exactly what is inside is a secret, but it is said to be about 80 feet by 25 feet and contains high-tech equipment. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, every pitcher who is in major league camp with them in February/March throws in the pitching lab. Tom Verducci recently accidentally lowered the cost of the lab ($60 million) in an article highlighting the team’s success.

Tom Verducci singled out one particular player who has benefited from the Milwaukee Brewers pitching lab this year.

In the same article mentioned above, Tom Verducci highlighted Frankie Montas. Verducci said that since his arrival, his arm space has grown a few inches, his fastball velocity has increased, and his fastball usage has increased from 67% to 82%. The result is his 3.82 ERA through his first six starts with the team.

The Milwaukee Brewers are capitalizing on the strengths of their pitchers and using their lab to develop them.

While what’s in the Brewers’ pitching lab has remained a mystery, their philosophy for pitchers coming in has become known. Multiple pitchers have said Milwaukee isn’t trying to make a lot of changes, but rather take what a pitcher already does well and build on it.

While Milwaukee has yet to receive the recognition it deserves, it is doing the same with its players, adopting a “you-be-you” motto and allowing players to build on what made them successful before they join the organization.
