Packers sections will not have lasting captains in 2024

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said his team will not have lasting captains for the 2024 season and has not decided to appoint captains weekly.

“We don’t have permanent captains,” LaFleur said Tuesday.

Many teams in the NFL vote on captains and announce the season-long captains before the start of the regular season. The designated captains receive a “C” captain’s patch on their uniforms.

Asked if the Packers will do something every week, LaFleur replied, “We’ll see.”

Possible controversies surrounding Za’Darius Smith — who was miffed at not being named a full-season captain in 2021 — and Jaire Alexander — who went to center field during the coin toss against the Carolina Panthers despite not being a captain, resulting in a suspension last year — factored into LaFleur’s decision not to have captains in 2024.

Likely captains would include point guard Jordan Love, guard Preston Smith, cornerback Jaire Alexander and perhaps even rookies Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney.

The Packers will fly to Brazil on Wednesday and will open the 2024 season with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

The last time the Packers selected captains for a full season was 2022, when quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Aaron Jones, center Marcedes Lewis, defensive lineman Kenny Clark, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and safety Adrian Amos were all elected captains. Only Clark remains on the Packers’ roster.

Last year, the Packers selected captains on a weekly basis.
