This Milwaukee Breweries lost 7-4 in the 12th inning Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Coach Pat Murphy used six different relievers in that game. Aaron Ashby, Trevor Megill and Devin Williams each took the game to extra innings, then Joel Payamps scored 10, Jared Koenig 11, and Elvis Peguero 12.
Unfortunately for Elvis Peguero, who had just been recalled that day, he allowed three runs and the Brew Crew were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning. After the game, Pat Murphy was asked if Peguero had failed in an all too familiar situation, but he suggested he would get another chance.
How did the 12th inning unfold for Elvis Peguero against the St. Louis Cardinals?
With the score tied 4-4 and a ghost runner on second base, Elvis Peguero opened the 12th inning by issuing a walk (nine pitches on the bat). He then threw a wild pitch and allowed two RBI base knocks to make it 6-4. From there, the runner stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by William Contreras. The third baseman eventually scored on a SAC fly. Peguero earned the remaining two outs of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Elvis Peguero has had trouble getting into games with runners on base this year.
In mid-August, the Milwaukee Brewers traded Elvis Peguero to the Minor Leagues. At first glance, the move was a bit of a shock, as he had a 3.00 ERA on the season at the time. However, he had trouble keeping infield runners from scoring. This year, he entered games with infield runners on base 24% of the time and scored 63% of the time.
The Milwaukee Brewers will give Elvis Peguero another chance.
Elvis Peguero was recalled from Triple-A at the same time Hoby Milner was activated from the injured list, Bryse Wilson was placed on the injured list, and Bryan Hudson was reassigned to the Minor Leagues. After the game, manager Pat Murphy admitted that it was a challenging situation for Peguero on his first day back, but that he would get another chance.
Today’s performance is an indication of, hey, how far has he come? What has he done? That was a tough spot to put on the first day back. It won’t be his last performance. He’ll get another chance.
