Milwaukee Brewers: Pat Murphy explains why 1.73 ERA high-leverage reliever was moved to minor leagues

Milwaukee Breweries Left-hander Bryan Hudson has been a pleasant surprise for the team this year. He was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason after being designated for assignment to make room for Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the 40-man roster. He has carved out a high-impact role this year, with a 1.73 ERA on the season, but has been moved to the Minor Leagues.

After the Brewers announced that Bryan Hudson had been optioned to the Minor League, Pat Murphy spoke to the media about the decision. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg indicated that Murphy said, “We didn’t really like everything we saw about how the ball was coming out, how he was reacting, things like that.” Hogg also noted that Murphy believed Hudson had exceeded his previous innings totals and that the time off would be counted toward Triple-A.

What bothered the Milwaukee Brewers so much that they decided to send Bryan Hudson to Triple-A?

As mentioned above, Pat Murphy wasn’t cheerful with the things they were seeing from Hudson, including the way the ball was coming out. It sounds like Murphy was referring to something mechanical. Looking further, MLB.com reporter Adam McCalvy noted that Hudson’s fastball velocity has dropped from around 92 mph at the start of the season to 90 mph or below recently.

What was the maximum number of innings pitched by Bryan Hudson in a single season?

According to Pat Murphy, the rest will be included as part of Hudson’s option to the Minor Leagues. Since the lost 2020 Minor League season, Bryan Hudson had previously thrown a maximum of 59 innings. Before the pandemic, he was built like a starting pitcher and worked over 100 innings on multiple occasions. This year, he has 62.1 innings in the Big League and 3.0 in the Minor League.

Given how good Bryan Hudson has been this year, it’s likely we’ll see him back at some point. Even with his reduced speed, he’s been effective in the bullpen, so barring an injury, expect him to return and rest at some point before the postseason.
