Despite the fact that northern Wisconsin has received a ton of snow this winter, DNR wildlife biologists believe the state’s wildlife, including deer, got enough rest early on to avoid the harsh winter in all but a few places.
When it comes to warming up their crystal ball as they look ahead to the 2023 archery, rifle and muzzleloader seasons, the only real unknown is how deer in northern Wisconsin will respond to the winter. All other deer range areas in Wisconsin are in good shape, according to Jeff Pritzl, DNR state deer ecologist in the Green Bay office. Pritzl said deer numbers look good in most areas as hunters hit the woods Sept. 16 for the opening of the 2023 archery deer season.
