Wisconsin Badgers Football: New York Jets’ Braelon Allen Sets New Super Bowl Era Record

Former Wisconsin Badgers star quarterback Braelon Allen finally got to play in his first regular-season NFL game Monday when the New York Jets took on the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara.

Most eyes in the game were on Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was making his first appearance since suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL campaign. But Allen still stole the spotlight despite barely seeing action on the field.

With a nine-yard catch slow in the fourth quarter, Allen became the youngest player to register a touch on offense in the Super Bowl era at age 20, 233 days. The rookie, a fourth-round draft pick out of Wisconsin, added an eight-yard run on the next play but had seen Breece Hall accumulate 21 touches before that point, so Allen is a distant second on the Jets’ running back depth chart heading into Week 2 against the Titans.

Allen spent most of the night on the bench, watching starter Breece Hall soak up touches from deep in the field. That wasn’t surprising, as Hall has always been the Jets’ clear RB1. Still, it was impressive to see Allen turn a few touches into a few yards, even if it came with the game practically out of New York’s reach.

Allen will have to be patient as Hall’s backup. At his age, he has plenty of opportunity to learn and carve out a bigger role in the pros.

Allen was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Jets.
