Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jackson Chourio predicted his grand slam with the bases empty

This Milwaukee Breweries rallied from an extra-inning loss in Cincinnati on Sunday to dispatch the St. Louis Cardinals at home on Monday, 9-3, with Milwaukee scoring all three of its points on three-run home runs by Willy Adames, Rhys Hoskins and Jackson Chourio.

Adames’ blast was his 29th of the year, which also came in the fall of his 29th birthday. His three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning was his 13th three-run homerun of the season, tying the season record for three homeruns set by Ken Griffey Jr. in 1996.

It was also his fifth consecutive game in which he hit a home run, tying him for the franchise record held by Jeromy Burnitz and Eric Thames.

The sixth inning began with the Brewers holding a 5-1 lead thanks to a three-run home run by Adames in the first inning and a two-run home run by Hoskins in the fourth. But the Cardinals began to make the game more fascinating, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to two.

Chourio, the Brewers’ star rookie who has led the National League in batting average since June 2, walked to base with the bases loaded and one out.

He crushed a fly ball off the center plate into deep left field for his second grand slam of the season. It was his 18th home run of the season and raised his RBI to 67. He also currently has a .278/.328/.461 average on the season.

After the game, Brewers pitcher Frankie Montas told reporters that Chourio approached him before Milwaukee sent a batter to base in the sixth inning. According to Montas (via Adam McCalvy), Chourio said, “I’m going to bat with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam.”

And so he did!

McCalvy reports that Adames said after the match, “That was amazing. That’s why he pointed at me and Frankie. We were talking about it and he said, ‘I’m going to hit it.’ And he did it. I thought, ‘Oh my God, he actually did it.'”

Chourio is only the third player whenever win multiple grand slams before turning 21. The other two are Alex Rodriguez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

If he hits two more home runs before the end of the season, he will become the first player in MLB history to have at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases before turning 21.
