Jeff Hafley’s first week as Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator ended with the appointment of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Saquon Barkley NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the 1st week of the 2024 season.
Barkley ran for over 100 yards, created 132 total yards and scored three total touchdowns in the Eagles’ 34-29 victory over the Packers in Week 1.
Barkley’s 109 yards were sixth in the NFL in Week 1 and second most among NFC running backs. More importantly, Barkley was the only player in the NFL to score three touchdowns in Week 1.
All three of Barkley’s touchdowns gave the Eagles the lead. The final score gave the Eagles the lead for good.
Barkley picked off Isaiah McDuffie for an 18-yard touchdown, burst through a wide-open hole for an 11-yard touchdown run and later capped a fumble-bound scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. He scored 18 of the Eagles’ 34 points.
Barkley finished the game with 24 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns and two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown. He had three runs of 10-plus yards, including a 34-yarder.
Last season, Jordan Love was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week in both Weeks 17 and 18, while the Packers’ ATP players of the week included Tommy DeVito of the New York Giants and Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Barkley’s last weekly honor came during the first week of the 2022 season.
