Milwaukee Brewers: Colin Rea sees his ERA escalate 49 points in disastrous outing against San Francisco Giants

Milwaukee Breweries Pitcher Colin Rea was probably the team’s most consistent starter through the first half of the season. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse after the All-Star break, and in his final appearance against the San Francisco Giants, he was tagged with 10 homers. Is there cause for concern about his future and the playoffs?

On Wednesday night at Oracle Park, the Giants faced Colin Rea. His 10 homers tied the most by an MLB pitcher this season. San Francisco scored four in the first inning, four in the second inning, and then two more in the fourth. Rea gave up three home runs and struck out 11. That boosted his season ERA by 0.49 points, as he entered the night with a 3.72 ERA and left it with a 4.21 ERA.

Let’s take a look at the stats of Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea before and after the All-Star break.

Before the All-Star break, Colin Rea appeared in 19 games for the Brewers (16 starts) and pitched 105 innings. He had a 3.77 ERA during that time, a 1.21 WHIP, and allowed 14 home runs. After the All-Star break, he made nine starts, pitched 49 innings, has a 5.14 ERA, and allowed 13 home runs. If you eliminate his last start, when he allowed 10 earned runs against the San Francisco Giants, his ERA after the All-Star break was 3.60.

If the postseason started today, would Colin Rea be part of the starting rotation in the Wild Card Series with the opportunity to play in three games?

The Brewers currently sit in the No. 3 spot in the playoffs and would have to play a best-of-three Wild Card series against the No. 6 seed. If the postseason started today, there’s a powerful argument that Colin Rea, who, as mentioned, was the team’s most consistent starter in the first half, might not be part of the starting rotation. His struggles after the All-Star break have something to do with that, but his teammates are playing very well, too.

Coming off the All-Star break, Tobias Myers currently leads all starting pitchers in ERA with a 2.63. Freddy Peralta is second at 3.25, Aaron Civale is third at 3.80, Frankie Montas is fourth at 3.92, and Colin Rea is next at 5.14. Myers and Peralta look like sure-fire starters to pitch in the first two games, and if needed (win or return), Milwaukee could likely get inventive with their pitching, but at this point it’s challenging to say whether Civale, Montas, or Rea would be the favorites to start a potential third game.
