Milwaukee Breweries trade deadline addition Frankie Montas recently had his worst outing since being acquired. The starting pitcher was tagged with seven runs scored (eight runs total) over 2.2 innings pitched against the Arizona Diamondbacks, in which he also hit three home runs. Manager Pat Murphy revealed after the game that Montas made a key mistake that allowed opposing pitchers to figure out what the upcoming pitch would be.
Frankie Montas was exposed by the Arizona Diamondbacks for calling his pitches.
In a quote-laden postgame press conference with manager Pat Murphy, he revealed that Frankie Montas was tipping his throws. Murphy said the runners on second base saw his catch and passed it on to the batsmen. Teams usually have a strategic way of conveying this information, such as a base runner calling the batsman by name for a fastball or by last name for an offspeed. Murphy wouldn’t reveal what code the Diamondbacks were using, but he acknowledged that he was aware that it was happening.
Not wanting to get lost in the afternoon’s chaos, Pat Murphy said Frankie Montas was tipping the ball and the runners on second base saw him catch it. They then passed it on to the batters.

Before his last appearance, Frankie Montas was a great asset to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Outside of that awful outing against the Diamondbacks, Frankie Montas has been a great addition to the Brewers. In his 10 starts, this was only the second time he failed to make it past the fifth inning. He also had two double-digit strikeout games in September and has three outings against Milwaukee in which he didn’t allow an earned run.
When will Frankie Montas pitch again?
With only six games left in the regular season, Frankie Montas should get another chance to get on the mound before the playoffs. His next appearance could be a planned shortened start to keep him fresh for a potential postseason appearance where he could potentially become the starter. Regardless of his next appearance, the main goal will be to hide his pitching handles so as not to give opponents a significant advantage.
