Rookie point guard named Milwaukee Bucks’ biggest future X-factor

It’s no secret that the Milwaukee Bucks’ aging core is a hindrance to winning more rings. If the franchise wants to build for the future, it has to start with AJ Johnson and his development for the team.

In the decisive move while 2024 NBA DraftBucks general manager Jon Horst opted for 19-year-old AJ Johnson, which sparked a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism from fans and analysts alike.

The selection of Johnson over more experienced college players like Ryan Dunn and Terrence Shannon Jr. has raised questions, especially given Johnson’s unimpressive statistical output in the NBL last season. Critics question whether he can make an immediate impact on a team with championship aspirations, especially as the veteran stars begin to age.

However, this bold move could pay off in the long run. If Johnson develops as expected, he has the potential to significantly extend the Bucks’ championship window. His selection is similar to the Philadelphia 76ers’ successful selection of Tyrese Maxey, who has become a key player for his team. This gamble underscores Horst’s vision of a more youthful roster that could inject much-needed athleticism into the lineup.

If the Bucks want to prepare for the future, they need to start now with Johnson. That’s emphasized in Grant Hughes’ NBA Analysis for Bleacher Report.

Just 19 years vintage, coming off a professional season with the Illawarra Hawks of the Australian National Basketball League, the 6’5” stick-thin guard races up and down the floor and attacks the rim with slick shots. While he won’t be replacing Damian Lillard at point guard anytime soon, it’s possible he could earn minutes by providing the speed and energy most other Bucks guards can’t.

The Bucks may have made a mistake in drafting Johnson, whose youth and gritty edges likely mean he’s not ready to consistently assist their quest for victory. But as a long-term play, this thrilling guard has plenty to offer.

Johnson will face stiff competition for playing time on a roster loaded with veterans, but his ability to adapt quickly could see him step up, especially if injuries strike. The Bucks are in a transitional phase, and integrating newborn talent like Johnson could be crucial to their future success.

If Johnson’s development aligns with the Bucks’ needs, he could become a valuable asset at key points during the season. This decision not only impacts the current roster, but also sets the tone for how the Bucks will approach future drafts and trades as they look to optimize their roster around their aging stars.
