Although reports of drums are somewhat higher in the major grouse hunting states, this does not always indicate better hunting. Warm spring temperatures and droughty conditions conducive to good nesting and chick survival are more crucial indicators. Fortunately, this is what the leading grouse hunting states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan experienced this spring. In addition, although winter conditions in these states were severe, the depth of snow and access to aspen buds provided the grouse with the protection and food source they need during the winter.
Overall, hunting quality should be at least as good as in previous years, especially in the western Great Lakes states where there is a lot of public land.
