One of the major turning points in Game 1 of the National League Wild-Card Round series between the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets was the participation of Joel Payamps.
With the Brewers leading the way in the fifth round and with the Mets having two men on and two outs, Jose Iglesias hit a grounder that was caught by Rhys Hoskins. However, Iglesias slid to first base, striking out Payamps and allowing Tyrone Taylor to score the decisive run.
After an 8-4 loss to the Mets, Payamps admitted he simply wasn’t able to do what he needed to do to record the outs.

“It’s a routine that I didn’t get to do,” Paympas said through a translator. “Things spiraled.”
After this action, he replaced Payamps, and Aaron Ashby took over the mound. But Ashby also struggled, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks issued in the same inning, giving New York a four-run lead at the end of the frame.
“They’re tough hitters, man,” Ashby said after the game about the Mets.
“They hit two shots, put the ball in play and make things happen. … I’m coming here this round to fight with the guys. I wasn’t making my shots as well as I can.”
The Milwaukee Brewers will have to forget about the series opener and focus on Wednesday’s elimination game
Poor performances from Payamps and Ashby highlighted the Brewers’ decision bring out Freddy Peraltathe early rounds backfired. Either way, the Brewers are still alive in the series as they look to avoid elimination this Wednesday.
In Game 2, Milwaukee will serve the ball to Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea will bat for the Mets.
