Wisconsin Football, now 2-2 and on a two-game losing streak, returns home this weekend to face Purdue. Last week, the Boilermakers lost 28-10 at home to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Their defense has huge problems against FBS opponents. This should be a good game for the Badgers, but nothing is guaranteed at this point. They need every victory they can get. The Wisconsin football offense needs to pick up steam
Purdue may be the worst team in the Big Ten and one of the worst teams in the FBS. After eliminating Indiana State in the first game of the season, they gave up an average of 44 points per game over the last three games, two of them at home, including 66 points to Notre Dame. This is not a good defense that only generated two turnovers.
If the Wisconsin football offense can’t beat the Purdue defense on Saturday, that will be a really bad recipe for the rest of the season. It doesn’t matter whether they run with the ball or throw it. If they can get something going and something they can rely on, it will be a better solution for them.
Find everything that makes you feel good
Both sides of the ball on the Wisconsin football team need something they can feel good about. The secondary has been cooked in two straight games and the offense has zero consistency. This is a game where I think both sides of the field can gain an advantage against what appears to be a bad Boilermaker team.
Defensively, we need to see quick passes. Luke Fickell attacked the portal to do this, but failed for a third of the season. Multiple sacks and pressure can be contagious and can impact a front seven that needs it and a secondary that needs to be protected.
Make the Hudson Card beat you
I like Purdue vs. Devon Mockobee. He is a physical runner and someone who can cause headaches for opposing defenses. Quarterback Hudson Card and threw for seven touchdowns, but had four interceptions and had 10 sacks. He is a dual threat option but can turn the ball over under pressure.
Last season, Card didn’t return a touchdown against the Badgers and had two interceptions. He ran the ball 13 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, but the Wisconsin football defense forced him to beat them, causing the team to generate turnovers. I expect a similar result this Saturday and hope the Badger defense can apply pressure while maintaining gaps in the defense.
