The Milwaukee Brewers suffered another devastating playoff loss on Thursday night, losing their Wild Card Series elimination game against the New York Mets. Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick scored the first runs of the game, hitting consecutive home runs to give Devin Williams a two-run lead in the ninth inning. Unfortunately, one of the game’s best closers was unable to get the job done, surrendering four runs and the Brew Crew lost 4-2.
New York Mets reliever Pete Alonso hit a three-run home run off Devin Williams in the ninth inning.
Leading the Mets lineup, Devin Williams started the ninth inning, walking an eight-pitch walk to Francisco Lindor. From there, he walked Mark Vientos with strikes, but Brandon Nimmo then scored once in midfield, taking advantage of a three-straight shift. Pete Alonso then began counting hitters (3-1) before making a low outside change to the opposite field and hitting a three-run home run.

After Alonso agreed to three home runs, Devin Williams gave up one more run before he was eventually replaced by Joe Ross. Williams forced Jose Iglesias to be ejected immediately after the home run, but then struck out Jesse Winker on a 1-2 count, allowed Winker to steal second base, and then gave up a base hit to Starling Marte before Winker ran home and decisively grounded after scoring. he stuck his helmet into the ground in excitement.
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams reacts to ninth-inning disaster, saying: “No one feels worse than me.”
One popular player interviewed after the game was Devin Williams. Williams was clearly disappointed with the result. He described his emotions as follows: “Everyone did their job except me. Nobody feels worse than me.”
“This is the closest team I’ve ever played with. That’s what makes it so much more disappointing. Everyone did their job except me.”

The Brewers’ string of bad postseason results continues.
Unfortunately, the Brewers have had no postseason luck since their deep playoff run in 2018. They failed similarly in 2019, blowing a overdue lead and losing to the Washington Nationals. Two years later they lost to the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves, last year they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and this year they were three outs away from their first postseason series win in five tries, but once again fell tiny.
Despite the result, the 2024 Brewers had a great season. They exceeded all expectations, but had the hallmarks of an exceptional team, which makes the loss to the Mets even more complex. The good news is that many of the youthful players will remain intact in 2025 and hopefully be in the playoffs again next year.
