Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday, October 8 that they will produce and distribute local games for the Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians during the 2025 season. In 2024, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres games were produced and distributed by MLB. This change is largely influenced by the ongoing bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group and the decline of the regional sports model that has brought local sports games to consumers for decades.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ novel TV deal will be great for consumers.
Assuming MLB and Milwaukee follow a similar model to the production and distribution of Diamondbacks, Rockies and Padres games in 2024, consumers can expect to be able to watch games in 2025 via cable or satellite TV as well as streaming. Many details will need to be ironed out this winter, but this essentially means that Brewers games could return to television in 2025.
In terms of costs, in 2024, fans of Arizona, Colorado and San Diego had the option of paying $20 per month to watch just their team, $100 to watch their team for the entire season, or $200 to watch their local team + MLB. TV.
Broadcasters and sideline reporters Brian Anderson, Jeff Levering, Bill Schroeder and Sophia Minnaert are expected to return. Additionally, MLB promises production features including the Ump Cam, live view to the MLB Replay Operations Center, Wire Cam, pre- and post-game on-field locations, a novel right-field camera with a shallow depth-of-field look and increased access such as in-game interviews game with players.
Could the novel TV deal result in a reduction in salaries?
Over the years, the regional sports model has been a good source of annual revenue for the organization.
