Pittsburgh Pirates brutally cut ties with former Milwaukee Brewers player for four-plate appearances without incentive bonus

Pittsburgh Pirates i Milwaukee Breweries began a three-game series on Tuesday, September 24. Before their matchup, Rowdy Tellez was designated for assignment by the Pirates. This deal saved Pittsburgh money, as Tellez was just four plate appearances away from receiving his incentive bonus.

Former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates last offseason.

After spending 2.5 seasons in Milwaukee, Rowdy Tellez entered free agency at the end of the 2023 season. He ended up signing with the Brewers’ division rival Pittsburgh Pirates. His contract with Pittsburgh was for one year and was worth $3.2 million with incentive bonuses of $200,000 if he reached 425, 475, 525 and 575 plate appearances.

Entering play on Tuesday, September 24, Rowdy Tellez had made 421 appearances for the season. Four more album appearances would earn him an additional $200,000. Instead of letting him come to Pittsburgh, I made a business decision and cut ties with him.

Will this have an impact on the later Pittsburgh Pirates?

Overall, this is not a good look for the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise. Baseball players pay attention to such details, and knowing that the organization has a history of cutting ties with players before incentive bonuses are achieved could impact their ability to sign free agents in the future.
