Remembering Leopold: Understanding the landscape as a whole has many practical applications for hunters

The goal is to teach the student to see the earth, understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands. I say land rather than wildlife because wildlife cannot be understood without understanding the landscape as a whole. —Aldo Leopold, 1942
A person can wander randomly looking for pheasants, but knowing the entire landscape should lend a hand determine where there is a greater or lesser chance of flushing roosters. We can say the same about turkeys, black grouses, woodcocks and other wild species.
