The Milwaukee Brewers have selected three players as finalists for the 2024 Rawling’s Gold Gloves Award. Infielder Brice Turang and outfielders Blake Perkins and Sal Frelick were among three finalists at their positions. One player who was removed from Gold Glove contention was third baseman Joey Ortiz.
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz has been removed from being a finalist for Rawling’s 2024 Gold Glove Award
Coming into spring training this year, Joey Ortiz had very little experience playing third base; however, this was where the Brewers had a hole in their lineup. Ortiz eventually earned the position and was the starting third baseman throughout the season, in which he showed sturdy performance. The rookie finished the 2024 season with 11 outs above average (tied for the most in the MLB with Matt Chapman) and finished fourth in defensive runs saved with seven.
Who are the 2024 Rawling Gold Glove finalists at third base?
This year St. Louis Cardinals Nolan Arenado, Matt Chapman of the San Francisco Giants and Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies are the three finalists for the Gold Glove award as a third baseman. Arenado won the award in each of his first 10 seasons in the massive leagues, but he didn’t win the award last year because Ke’Bryan Hayes eliminated him. Chapman has won a Gold Glove four times in his career, and McMahon is looking for his first.
Looking at advanced metrics, Ortiz finished higher than Arenado in outs above average and defensive runs saved. Additionally, Ortiz committed one more error than Arenado last season, but Ortiz also had an advantage in doubles (23 vs. 21).
Ortiz certainly deserved a spot in the final over Arenado, but unfortunately Arenado’s pedigree may have allowed him to be named a finalist instead.
