After the spring calving season, the northern Wisconsin elk herd is expected to number about 355, and the newer southern herd is expected to number about 160 when the calves hit the ground in June.
At the May 24 meeting, the DNR informed the Natural Resources Board that the Clam Lake herd in Ashland and Sawyer counties now numbers about 271 elk and about 130 in Jackson County’s Black River State Forest.
