The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to lose reliever Willy Adames in free agency this offseason. Therefore, a void opens at the bus stop. One candidate who has emerged as a favorite to take over is Joey Ortiz; who was a backup before taking over nicely at third base last year. Here we put a break on this idea and discuss three reasons why this position change should not take place.
Three reasons why the Milwaukee Brewers should keep Joey Ortiz at third base in 2025
- Joey Ortiz has emerged as a Gold Glove caliber third baseman in 2024
Despite having minimal experience at warm corners entering last season, Joey Ortiz was statistically one of the best third basemen, and there is an argument that he was passed over as a Gold Glove finalist. He has the strength and athleticism to succeed on the field in a major league, but why change something that worked exceptionally well a season ago?
- Joey Ortiz has more to prove offensively, and adding stoppage pressure could potentially be a hindrance
As mentioned in 2024, Joey Ortiz’s glove and arm work at third base has been amazing, but he has been inconsistent offensively. For a rookie, this isn’t that surprising, but a position change could potentially impact it. Luis Urias is an example of a recent Brewers shortstop who had difficulty transitioning from third base to the shortstop position and, as a result, pressed offensively. Allowing Ortiz to remain in a position where he has excelled may be the best thing for his offensive development.
- The Milwaukee Brewers may look to outside solutions to address their 2025 retention issue
Replacing the production that Willy Adames has provided throughout his career with the Brewers is unlikely, but the club may look to outside sources to take his place. Years 2024-2025 free agent class isn’t that sturdy, but trade speculation surrounding Bo Bichette is sure to heat up this offseason as he enters his final year of team control. GM Matt Arnold has a reputation for sneaking into trade talks, so who knows what he might have in store this winter.
Overall, Joey Ortiz was phenomenal at third base last year and has the tools to be a successful massive league hitter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option for him. Moving to a leading position, such as a substitute, may escalate pressure and disrupt his offensive play; which was already passé a season ago.
