‘Phil Longo is choking’ – Wisconsin football desperately looking for answers on offense after a 5-3 start

The Wisconsin football staff is hoping to turn things around on offense after two exhilarating performances before the loss.

Attack coordinator Phil Longo was the main reason for most of Wisconsin fans’ complaints about the team. When Longo was hired, the concept of an “air raid” offense involving high-caliber quarterback play and deep touchdowns was discarded. The result in Madison, however, was far from a perfect picture.

Although there have been moments where the offense has come alive, especially this season. Longo started the season on lean ice with many fans after struggling to post a 7-6 record last season and was without point guard Tanner Mordecai for a period of time.

Longo was dealt the same hand this season, losing to quarterback Tyler Van Dyke after just a few games. Backup quarterback Braedyn Locke was thrust into the starting role, and his development was full of peaks and valleys. Locke now has an interception in every start this season, including a relief appearance against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Between Locke’s struggles, the lack of consistency on offense and the strange behavior of many players, Wisconsin fans are wondering how long Longo will remain with the team.

Will Phil Longo keep Wisconsin football mighty next season?

Given Wisconsin’s previous football offense craze, Longo was probably doing enough to keep his job. However, if the losses from the struggle continue to accumulate, the coordinator could potentially face rapid failure.

Currently, the Wisconsin football team is 5-3 this season after seemingly climbing up the Big Ten Conference standings. The loss to Penn State hurts especially badly because the offense slumped again after the first half, much like the team did against the USC Trojans. Locke’s pick-six in the second half, in particular, caused a huge shift in morale, and the offense never seemed to recover from the play.

If the Wisconsin football team can get back to winning ways against the Iowa Hawkeyes, which is a stout defense, Longo should be sheltered for now.
