Although he never played for the Milwaukee Brewers during his baseball career, Bob Uecker is still considered a Brewers hero by many fans. With a half-century of game after game under his belt that heralded the team, it’s no wonder that CBS Sunday Morning, in its recent story about him, hailed him as “the most authentic of all the Milwaukee accents.” Uecker, born in Milwaukee and repeatedly turning down offers from other bands, has become a fixture in beer culture over the years.
Milwaukee Brewers hero in the CBS spotlight
Although Uecker turned down the Yankees’ offer, he accepted numerous television roles, appearing as a stand-up on the Tonight Show, appearing on a sitcom, appearing in commercials and giving an iconic performance in the “Major League” movies. Due to his busy announcing and appearance schedule, Uecker became well known both outside and inside Milwaukee.
To honor and celebrate Milwaukee’s hometown hero, a statue of Bob Uecker now stands at Brewers Stadium. This full-color fixture is located in the back row of the stadium, just behind a enormous pole. The statue, with its arm extended to the side, provides the perfect opportunity for Brewers fans to take a photo with this iconic figure in Brewers history. Given that the seat itself probably wasn’t very desirable before due to needy visibility, I’ll add this tribute, what a great way to turn a bad seat into something special.
Despite his extensive advertising and concert career, Bob Uecker still considered himself a gamer. Current Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Brandon Woodruff shared with CBS Sunday Morning that Uecker continues to share stories from his days as a catcher for the team, stating that “he is one of us. He’s part of the team.” Given Uecker’s long history with the Breweries, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn’t agree with that!
