Milwaukee Brewers trade target: 2B Brandon Lowe

The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays have quite a track record of trading with each other. Willy Adames and Trevor Richards in exchange for JP Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen was a gigantic deal that took place already in 2021, but the Rays have also sent gigantic leaguers like Javy Guerra, Mike Brosseau and Aaron Civale to the Brewers in the past. Could the two sides team up for another deal this offseason?

Recently, The Tampa Bay Rays announced they are picking up Brandon Lowe’s 2025 club option. The 30-year-old second baseman already signed a team-friendly six-year, $24 million contract, but his salary is expected to boost to $10.5 million next year. Tampa Bay operates similarly to Milwaukee in that it keeps its payroll low and isn’t afraid to make trades to do so. Now that Brandon Lowe is their highest-paid position player, it has sparked speculation as to whether this will happen will be sold or not out of season.

Where would Brandon Lowe fit in with the Milwaukee Brewers?

Defensively, Brandon Lowe is best at second base. If the Brewers were to pursue him, that would mean Brice Turang would move to shortstop. Brandon Lowe’s biggest asset comes offensively, as he’s almost certain to hit 20 home runs. In his prime in 2021, he smashed 39 long balls and collected 99 RBI. Acquiring a player like Lowe won’t replace the lost production from Willy Adames entering free agency, but he is a power threat who could benefit from being surrounded by contact- and on-base players.

What are the reasons why the Brewers shouldn’t trade for Brandon Lowe?

There are a few things that make me hesitate to say “go out and trade for Brandon Lowe.” First, he doesn’t fit the Brewers mold defensively. He has played a below-average defensive second base throughout his career. He has retained 8 defensive runs in his career (DRS) and his arm strength is well below average.

Secondly, there are health problems. Lower back issues narrow him to just 65 games in 2022 and 109 in 2023. An oblique injury also cost him significant time a season ago, in which he played in 107 games.

All in all, Brandon Lowe will likely be a trade target for several teams this offseason. He would be useful to the Brewers offensively, but there are health risks and defensive concerns that could ultimately prevent a deal from happening.
