While everyone was paying more attention in the offseason to massive names like All-Star winger Paul George signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Milwaukee Bucks quietly signed Delon Wright. However, according to NBA analysis, this was an underestimated move and could be beneficial for the franchise.
The Bucks signed Wright to a one-year contract worth $3.3 million a few months ago. Selected with the 20th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the guard brings wealth of experience to the Bucks squad whose goal is to compete for the NBA championship.
Last season, Wright played for the Miami Heat and Washington Wizards, averaging 4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 47 games. He showed off his shooting skills by shooting 39.4% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. Over his nine-year career, he appeared in 508 regular season games, averaging 7.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists, while also contributing defensively with 1.2 steals per game.
Wright’s addition comes after a arduous playoff run for the Bucks, where they finished third in the Eastern Conference with a 49-33 record. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the first round by the Indiana Pacers, a series that was marred by injuries to key players, including All-Star point guard Damian Lillard and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Sports Illustrated is highlighting the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to sign Delon Wright
While no one has yet seen Wright in action for the Bucks, there is already hope that he can be productive for the team, especially defensively. This is analyzed in the article entitled Cody Smith from Sports Illustrated.
Wright, who is expected to be one of the first players off the bench in Milwaukee’s turnover this season, was highlighted this week by longtime NBA reporter David Aldridge. Appearing on Tuesday’s Hear District podcast with Bucks legend Marques Johnson, Aldridge talked about Milwaukee’s free agents, and specifically Wright.
“I like what they do [Milwaukee] what I did in the offseason, especially with Delon Wright. He’s so underrated. He’s still so smart. He is still extremely effective defensively. I call him KOD – King of Reflection. He will bounce balls out of bounds and strengthen the other team’s attack. You’ll like it.”
This move solves previous issues with the backup quarterback play and adds a forceful defensive presence. Wright, who has experience with teams like the Washington Wizards and Miami Heat, offers valuable depth without breaking the Bucks’ budget. The signing is seen as a clever and protected addition for the upcoming season.
As the Bucks look to rebound, Wright’s veteran presence and skill set could play a key role in improving the team’s performance. His experience in high-pressure situations could prove invaluable as Milwaukee looks to make a deeper playoff run this coming season.
