Free agent Willy Adames will be a very desirable player this winter. He is the best reliever available and is coming off a career season that included over 30 home runs and 100 RBI. Unsurprisingly, the Milwaukee Brewers made him a qualifying offer, but he is expected to decline the offer and sign a long-term deal that will be in a price range higher than what the Brew Crew is willing to pay.
What is the qualifying offer?
In baseball, teams can extend qualifying offers to select free agents. A qualifying offer is a one-year contract set at a specified value (average salary of 125 highest-paid MLB players). This year’s qualifying bid is worth $21.05 million.
So it’s no surprise that Milwaukee extended a qualifying offer to Willy Adames. The deadline for players to accept or reject qualifying offers is November 19. If the player does not accept them and signs elsewhere, the Brewers will be compensated for the draft pick in return.
Willy Adames said he is willing to stay with the Milwaukee Brewers for less money
Willy Adames is expected to sign a $150-200 million contract this offseason. In an article written in The Athletic by Will Sammon and Katie Woo (subscription required): Willy Adames has indicated he is willing to stay with the Milwaukee Brewers for less moneybut that he also wants what is just and deserved for all his professional achievements.
“I’m willing to stay here for less money, let’s say, but I just want to be forthright about what I deserve in my career and everything I’ve done. We’ll just have to wait and see where we end up. You never know what’s going to happen and you never know who will be willing to commit to a long-term relationship with me.
How likely is it that Willy Adames will take advantage of his hometown discount to stay with the Brewers?
It’s nice to hear Willy Adames’ comments, but he has also made it clear that he wants what he deserves and that he is looking for a long-term deal. For Adames to take advantage of the hometown discount, the Brewers’ offering will have to be on par with other major markets willing to pay. The chance of such a scenario occurring is tiny.
