After a dominant second half Monday against Holy Cross, Wisconsin basketball will stay home tomorrow night. The Badgers will face the Montana St. Bobcats in the Big Sky Conference. This will be the first game of the season for the Bobcats, who were eliminated from the NCAA tournament last season. He should be a good opponent for Wisconsin basketball. Tip time is 7pm on BTN Plus. Here’s a preview of tomorrow’s match.
Wisconsin basketball needs to start much sooner
Monday was the worst possible start you could have playing Wisconsin basketball. The Badgers trailed 23-7 midway through the first half. It was largely due to missed shots and needy defense. It took them longer than it should have to get into the flow of the game. What was most discouraging was the fact that four of the five starters were on last year’s team. The way this team plays defense shouldn’t be a surprise.
Tomorrow I want to see the Badgers focus on defense and take over the game. Good defense usually leads to good attacking and open looks. The Bobcats appear to be a much better team than Holy Cross. If Wisconsin falls behind this early, I’m not sure they’ll be able to come back.
Work on painting to achieve a three-point look
Montana St will also be much larger. The Bobcats have eight players who are 6-foot-7 or taller. In the Badgers’ case, there are seven. This is a painting game. I know Greg Gard mentioned that they will be shooting a lot of threes this year, but a lot of those looks are due to adjustments in the paint.
The Wisconsin basketball team had its best offensive performance a year ago when the ball went into Steven Crowl’s net. Makes good decisions and decides whether to attack the rim or back off. These usually lead to a good swing attack and an open three. Even if you miss, it’s usually a good shot. I want this to happen more often tomorrow. The first few games were brutal, sometimes three games in, but it’s a good habit that can lead to success
Forecast
I wouldn’t want Montana St’s 18 losses last year to fool you. 10 of those turnovers were worth six points or less. They played a lot a season ago.
The Bobcats also return three starters, with two of them earning preseason conference honors in the Big Sky. The Big Sky media picked this team as first place, while the coaches claimed it was second. Either way, I think this is a good team for the Badgers to face tomorrow.
This is also the Bobcats’ first game. They didn’t play on Monday, although it seemed like everyone was playing. Like Holy Cross, they have no pressure. It all belongs to the Wisconsin basketball team. Montana St also features a veteran team consisting of seven seniors/graduates and five juniors. They won’t be afraid to come to the Kohl Center.
I think Wisconsin basketball found some good things in the second half against Holy Cross and can utilize it to their advantage. Ultimately, as long as they take care of business, they shouldn’t have a problem. This will be a tighter game than most think, but UW pulls away in the second half.
