Reinhardt conducts Beethoven

Ruth Reinhardt, “an elegant, versatile and committed conductor in search of expressive colors” (Scherzo), directs this program, which includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 – too often overlooked, this turbulent music turns storms into sunlight. The winds glisten in Carl Maria von Weber’s enduring Symphonic Metamorphosis of Hindemith’s Themes; the music was originally sketched as a ballet, and its four distinctive movements retain its catchy choreography. (Weber has a chance to speak at the most crucial point of the program, through the Overture to his fantastic opera Oberon). Beethoven’s expressive Third Piano Concerto is among his finest works; With this gem begins Alessio Bax, whom Gramophone considers “undoubtedly one of the greatest young pianists performing in front of audiences today.”
