Following Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Miami Marlins in extra innings, the Milwaukee Brewers entered the second game of a three-game series with full strength against one of the worst teams in the Majors. At one point, the Brewers were trailing 5-4, but three runs in the eighth inning gave Milwaukee the advantage. 7-5 leading and ultimately winning.
With the victory, the Brewers are 28-20 and are in first place in the National League Central by a game and a half. The Marlins, with a record of 16-34, are currently 19 and a half games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the fight for first place in the National League East. Miami is six games behind the fourth-place New York Mets, 21-27.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ stunning eighth-inning rally gave them the win over Miami
In the top of the first inning, Brewers catcher William Contreras belted an RBI double to right-center field, giving Milwaukee its first run of the ball game. An inning later, center fielder Blake Perkins hit an RBI ground ball to left field. Miami got a hit in the bottom of the second inning when second baseman Otto López hit an RBI single to left field. An inning and a half later, in the top of the fourth, William Contreras hit a two-run single to left field to give the Brewers a solid 4-1 lead.
Marlins come back to take the lead
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Marlins first baseman Josh Bell, who hit the game-winning shot on Monday night, made a sacrifice fly to right-center field to cut the deficit to 4-2. A round later, Otto López drove in Jazz Chisholm Jr. after a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. On the next at-bat, Marlins third baseman Emmanuel Rivera hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game with four runs scored. Miami took the lead when right fielder Dane Myers made a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Brewers’ three-run inning carries them to victory
Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich destroyed two runs to center field in the top of the eighth inning, allowing the Brewers to retake the lead with a score of 6-5. Milwaukee scored another run when the next batter, Willy Adames, hit an RBI double down the left field line, giving his team a two-run lead and the eventual victory.
Milwaukee starting pitcher Robert Gasser threw six innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. Brewers pitcher Tobias Myers earned his first Major League win after throwing one inning, allowing one run, while striking out two Marlins. Catcher William Contreras went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the Brewers’ monumental victory. Miami Marlins starting pitcher Trevor Rogers pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four batters. Marlins second baseman Otto López went one for three with two RBIs.
