Packers sections return QB-turned-WR to practice squad

The Green Bay Packers returned quarterback-turned-receiver Alex McGough to the practice squad on Wednesday.

McGough, a seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, made the switch from point guard to wide receiver in Green Bay this past offseason. While trying to earn a roster spot, McGough suffered several lower-body injuries and was ultimately released with an injury before training camp began in July.

A hearty McGough will have a chance to continue to develop as a receiver for the Packers. On Wednesday, he was at training wearing uniform No. 16.

“It’s great to have him back,” coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday. “He’s a great teammate. The guys really enjoy his presence. He looks hearty and ready to fight. We’ll get it back up and running and see where it is.

In May, LaFleur said McGough impressed the Packers as a receiver when he ran with the scout team on the practice squad last year.

“He’s a really athletic guy,” LaFleur said after minicamp practice. “He spent a lot of time on the scout team covering the receiving routes and did a great job. We think he’s such a talented athlete, so why not give him a chance? He’s a shrewd guy, he works on his head. I think he can also contribute to (special teams) development. We felt this might be his best chance here.

McGough spent the entire 2023 season as the team’s third point guard on the practice squad. With Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt being drafted at the quarterback position over the summer, McGough’s chances of staying in Green Bay dropped dramatically, which helped accelerate the position change.

McGough is a two-time USFL champion and the 2023 USFL MVP as a quarterback. He previously spent time with the Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans before playing two seasons with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

McGough joins Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson and Malik Knowles as the four receivers on the team’s practice squad.

McGough turned 29 on Tuesday.
