Milwaukee Brewers: 2x All-Star Closer considered a potential replacement for Devin Williams

The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the most talked about teams in the league Major League Baseball since the offseason started. Of course, this is mainly due to the fact that Willy Adames, their star midfielder, is now a free agent. After hitting .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs, 112 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 2024, Adames is easily the best player at his position on the open market.

With all the speculation about where Adames will sign this offseason, many have overlooked the fact that the Brewers find themselves in a similar situation with one of their star pitchers as they did last year with Corbin Burnes.

Williams, as Brewers fans will remember, missed most of the 2024 season with a stress fracture in his back. When he returned, he returned to his dominant form, posting a 1-0 record, 1.59 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 14 saves.

Earlier this month, Milwaukee declined Williams’ $10.5 million club option for 2025. However, that did not make him a free agent because he still has one year of arbitration left.

The Brewers likely declined this option because they want to save money on their payroll. Williams’ back injury could make him cheaper after the arbitration hearing if the two sides don’t reach an agreement on a 2025 contract before then.

However, it’s possible that Milwaukee has no plans to pay Williams at all in 2025. With next season being his last year in control of the club, many believe the Brewers will trade him, much like Burnes and Josh Hader did.

The Milwaukee Brewers could sign Jordan Romano to a two-time All-Star Closer contract

Trevor Megill led the Brewers with 21 saves in 2024, posting a 2.72 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. And while Megill and his 100-mph fastball will return next year, Milwaukee may prefer to keep him in a setup role.

If they trade Williams, the Brewers could consider recently untendered Jordan Romano as a potential replacement.

By Curt Bishop Illustrated sports“If [Williams] is traded, there are options the Brewers could pursue to replace him, something they will try to combat in 2025. “Maybe they could take a look at Jordan Romano, who was recently untendered by the Toronto Blue Jays.”

Romano suffered injuries in 2024, appearing in just 15 games, posting a 6.59 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and eight saves.

However, from 2021-2023, the former Blue Jays closer was one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. Over those three seasons, he had a 2.37 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 95 saves. He also struck out 230 batters in 186.0 innings.

The Brewers are well known for reviving the careers of pitchers, especially relief pitchers. Romano’s injuries in 2024 will likely impact his price in free agency, so it’s possible he signs a one-year deal with Milwaukee to get his career back on track and raise his price for 2026.
