Former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst may soon return to a college football head coaching position. He was the head coach of the Badgers from 2014 to 2022. While with the Badgers, his record was 67-26 overall and 43-18 in BIG10 conference play.
Chryst has not been a member of any college football coaching staff after serving on the Texas Longhorns coaching staff as an OA/special assistant to the head coach a year ago. There are several jobs that opened up on Sunday in the college football landscape.
CBS Sports will back reports from Purdue Boilermakers that they could target former Wisconsin Badgers coach Paul Chryst as their next head coach
On Sunday, the Purdue Boilermakers fired Ryan Walters as the head coach of the football program after just two seasons. Purdue finished with a 1-11 record and lost on Saturday night on the road to the Indiana Hoosiers by a final score of 66-0. It will be compelling to see who becomes Purdue’s next head coach.
on Sunday, Will Backus, CBS Sports Writer reported that one of the names who could potentially become the next head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers is former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst. Backus said:
“Chryst hasn’t been a full-time coach for a few years, but he’s a rare option with ready-made Big Ten experience and there’s nothing really tying him down. Chryst, a former Wisconsin quarterback, spent several years as an assistant at his alma mater and received his first head coaching opportunity at the school Pittsburgh and returned to Madison in 2015 to replace Gary Andersen. Chryst won 10 games in four of his first five seasons and led the Badgers to three Big Ten West titles in the same span. While Wisconsin suffered a bit of a decline in the 2020-22 season, leading to Chryst ultimately playing five games in the 2022 campaign, he never recorded a Big Ten loss in a full season with the program. Chryst appears to be a solid candidate to return to coaching if he so desires.”
Chryst would be a unthreatening hire for the Boilermakers. Paul Chryst understands the nature of the BIG10 conference and would like to see Purdue become a solemn football program again.
Keep an eye on Ryan Day
There are other potential candidates for the Purdue Boilermakers job, but one name to keep an eye on is Ryan Day, head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. There is a chance that Day and the Buckeyes will part ways after the season if they do not win the national title.
It will be compelling to see how long it takes Purdue to search for a job. Are they willing to take the time to hire this employee, or will they want someone right away? That’s something that remains to be seen, and it would be fun if Purdue hired former Wisconsin Badgers coach Paul Chryst to lead their program.
