Wisconsin Mixed Bag: Natural Resources Board Meeting on Wednesday, September 25 in Plover

Madison – The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) will meet in person to consider rulemaking documents at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, at the Ag Grand Hall’s Food + Farm Exploration Center at 3400 Innovation Drive in Plover. Society can watch the meeting on DNR YouTube Channel.

The deadline for registering public speaking requests and submitting written comments is Wednesday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m. Public testimony given remotely via Zoom may be accepted. Personal public appearances are also welcome.

The Board will consider: Rules for the placement of structures and crossings in waterways, rules for modifying and expanding universal waste management regulations, rules for incorporating federal hazardous waste regulations promulgated since the previous authorization of the Wisconsin hazardous waste program, rules related to state technical amendments hazardous waste regulations and wildlife damage and mitigation policies.

The DNR will also ask the board to approve a statement regarding the scope of the proposed off-road vehicle regulations.

Three DNR fish hatcheries open their doors to the public during October open houses

Madison – The DNR has set dates for free October open houses at two fish spawning facilities and one fish hatchery – the Besadny Anadromous Fish Center, the Root River Steelhead Facility and the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery. Each open house will be an opportunity for attendees to see fish up close and learn how hatcheries and spawning facilities support maintain Wisconsin’s fish population.

• Kewaunee – Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Besadny Anadromous Fish Center to watch salmon spawn collection demonstrations, enjoy educational demonstrations and take a guided tour of the facility. Great Lakes Algoma Kewaunee sport fishermen will provide wagon rides.

• Racine – Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Root River Steelhead Facility, 2200 Domanik Drive, Lincoln Park, Racine. On this day there will be trips and fish spawning shows. Volunteers from Salmon Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and Milwaukee Great Lakes Sport Fishermen will provide educational fishing stations where visitors can try novel casting techniques and take knot and fly tying lessons.

• Wild Rose – Saturday, October 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery Education Center, N5871 Hwy. 22, Wild Rose. The program includes games and activities for people of all ages, including casting workshops and tips on fish identification. Other activities include printing fish on bags, building a spinner bait, making clay Kool-Aid fish, and touring the original 1908 hatchery and current facility.

The road project at the main entrance to the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge will begin on September 16

Trempealeau, Wis. — Work on the main entrance to the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge is expected to begin Monday,
September 16 and will last until the end of the project. Visitors can enter the shelter through Marshland Access, but opening hours may vary depending on construction. For current information, call the shelter office at (608) 539-2311.

Once the work is completed, the main road will remain open throughout the winter. The second stage of the project will start next year.

DNR Buys red and white pine cones

Madison — The DNR is purchasing white pine and red pine cones again this fall from three state nurseries, paying $125 per bushel (8 gallons) for red pine cones and $60 per bushel for white pine cones. Experienced pickers can harvest a bushel of red pine cones in about two to three hours if the cones are good. White pine cones are larger, so it usually takes about an hour to harvest a bushel.
