The last time the Green Bay Packers drafted a player from Southern Methodist University was in 1982 when they selected kicker Eddie Garcia 264th overall.
There may be two prospects on Green Bay’s radar that could end this streak. Let’s take a look at them before SMU faces Penn State in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday. The start is scheduled for 11:00 Polish time
Brashard Smith, RB
Josh Jacobs could go down as the best offensive free agent in franchise history. The former Alabama running back has been a workhorse for the Packers, and at 26 years elderly, he figures he can hold his own against most of the players in Green Bay for the foreseeable future.
Considering Jacobs, MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks are under contract beyond this season, it’s protected to assume the Packers won’t apply a premium pick at the running back position. This shifts our attention to the goals of Day 3. This is where Smith joins the conversation.
Smith, a converted wide receiver, rushed for 1,270 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first season. The transfer to Miami also resulted in 35 receptions for 303 yards and four touchdowns.
Smith is a fluid athlete who can combine moves to weave in and out of traffic. As a former winger, he can track the ball away from his body and catch and release it without choking.
SMU’s running back brings value to special teams as a returner. At Miami in 2023, Smith led the ACC in return yards (579) and average (29).
Elijah Roberts, Edge
Roberts looks good off the bus. Weighing in at just under 6-4 and 275 pounds, Roberts has the perfect physique. Since transferring from Miami in 2023, Roberts has recorded 15.5 sacks and 128 pressures. Roberts rushes with power and runs over offensive linemen, disrupting the play.
