Milwaukee Brewers perspective Tyler Black has been marked as potential commercial candidate. No leaked reports indicate that it is occupied, but various authors have compiled compelling cases explaining why it could be moved. Here, we explore the reverse and why moving him would be a costly mistake.
Tyler Black fits the offensive profile that the Milwaukee Brewers value
Last year, the Brewers adopted a fast-paced, high-pressure offense, focusing on putting the ball in play and using their speed to challenge opposing defenses. Tyler Black is a player who excels in both areas. While he may not match the elite contact skills of Brice Turang and Sal Frelick, his ability to avoid strikeouts remains powerful. Additionally, Black’s speed is comparable to that of the Brewers’ best runners, and he is just two years removed from a stellar season in which he stole 55 bases. His combination of contact skills and base-stealing ability make him a valuable asset to a team with a high-level MLB hitter.
Where does Tyler Black fit on defense?
There are a lot of misconceptions about Tyler Black’s defensive abilities and where he will ultimately land. Here’s what we know. He was drafted without a true defensive home, but played primarily second base at Wright State University. The Brewers appreciated his athleticism and initially allowed him to play all over the infield as well as center field. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken shoulder blade on a defensive play that resulted in him hitting the wall, and later that year, while playing in the Arizona Fall League, he suffered a broken thumb while trying to get more work due to the time lost in the season.
In 2023, the Brewers chose third base to focus on. Later in the season, he was moved to first base. This wasn’t because of his performance, but because Milwaukee was cycling through first basemen like Rowdy Tellez, Luke Voit and Jon Singleton at the time. They wanted Black to have some reps at first base in case he received a future MLB call-up, but Carlos Santana was eventually acquired and the following year Rhys Hoskins and Jake Bauers split first base duties.
While his true defensive style is still up for debate, his willingness to change positions and work ethic to improve and learn from each position should be seen as a strength, not a weakness.
Trading Tyler Black would be a costly mistake
The Brewers currently have openings at the backup first baseman and starting third baseman, both of which are up for grabs. Tyler Black could fulfill either role, but he’ll have to earn it. His 2024 MLB numbers, which aren’t great, should be treated with caution because they’re based on a petite sample size of just 57 plate appearances. Historically, Brewers players have made significant progress in their “sophomore” seasons, and Black could be the next to follow suit. However, if the team sells the former 33rd player in the off-season, they will never have the opportunity to find out.
