Patrick Durkin: Smaller fish attract more doubt than love on anglers’ menus

On summer fishing trips to Canada in the 1990s, my wife never expected to catch enough fish by noon to feed our three daughters over lunch ashore on the nearest island. That’s why we never left the house without heated dogs in the fridge.
“Just in case,” Penny said.
Also realize that we are not snobs about what fish we eat. Even though our girls fought for walleye cheeks, we never stuck with the Walters. For lunch ashore, we regularly pan-fried northern pike and smallmouth bass on an ancient two-burner Coleman stove.
