Wisconsin roundup: More crossbow hunters are at least part of the reason for lower deer harvests in the north

There is always a temptation to dissect deer harvest data and what those numbers might mean once we look at preliminary deer harvest totals and those from early archery and crossbow seasons.
For some time now, many hunters in northern Wisconsin have lamented the lack of success in some areas during deer season. While many DNR officials maintain that the situation for the northern deer herd isn’t as dire as hunters make it out to be, most agree that if there’s a difference from now compared to, oh, 15 or 16 years ago, we’re probably talking about a lot reasons, not just one or two.
