At a January meeting of the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB), DNR officials reminded NRB members that most funding for fish, wildlife and law enforcement comes from the “conservation fund,” also known as the Fish and Wildlife bill, which is funded mainly by hunting, fishing and trapping license fees, as well as special stamps required for certain species of fish and wildlife.
The fund typically “rotates” on a 10-year cycle, accumulating funds at the beginning of those 10 years while paying for classic conservation activities. The DNR “spends” the fund later in the cycle when there have been past license fee increases.
