The Milwaukee Brewers almost certainly won’t finish tinkering with their roster before the start of the 2025 MLB season. But with spring training set to begin next month, there likely won’t be any major trades in the Milwaukee front office, that doesn’t mean they’ve been shopping for a large free agent anyway.
Despite this, there are still plenty of free agents available, and many of them are in the Brewers’ price range. The problem is that most of them would never make Milwaukee’s roster for various reasons. This was the case with one of the signing proposals proposed by Illustrated sports.
The Milwaukee Brewers are encouraged to sign free agent Joey Gallo
IN recent articlePatrick McAvoy suggested that Milwaukee sign free agent first baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo, who spent last season with the Washington Nationals.
Gallo, who has played both the corners, first base and third base during his Major League career, certainly has one thing the Brewers like in a player: the ability to play multiple positions. He has also been a solid hitter historically, with two All-Star nods and a Gold Glove to his name.
On potentially signing Gallo, McAvoy authors: “The Brewers are a team that likely won’t invest heavily in anyone. Gallo is someone who can help add some power at a low cost. Why not consider it at this point?”
In fact, there are plenty of reasons why Milwaukee shouldn’t consider him.
Joey Gallo would be a terrible fit for the Milwaukee Brewers
While McAvoy suggests Gallo for the bench, there are other things to consider about him that simply make him a misfit for the current Brewers lineup.
First, they re-signed Jake Bauers, albeit to a minor league deal. That being said, Bauers was better than Gallo last season and could steal bases, and Murphy wants almost all of his players to be able to do that.
But perhaps the most essential reason brewers should avoid Gallo is that he hasn’t hit .200 since 2019.
As of 2020, Gallo has a slash line of .179/.310/.404 while averaging 20 home runs and 43 RBI on the season. That being said, the 38 home runs he hit in 2021 dramatically inflated that average. Last year he scored 10 points for the Washington Nationals, appearing in 76 games. He also scored 102 times in those 76 games.
For his career, Gallo has averages of .194/.319/.456.
Last season, Bauers hit .199/.201/.361 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI and 13 stolen bases. He also plays first base and corner outfield (and appeared in four games as a pitcher when the results were inconsistent).
In other words, they are virtually the same player, with Bauers having more speed than Gallo. The fact that he has a minor league contract makes him even more affordable.
