Milwaukee Brewers acquire 26-year-old pitcher who had a 1.74 ERA in Japan last year

The Milwaukee Brewers signed an MLB contract for the second time this offseason, acquiring a 26-year-old pitcher who played in Japan last year. No, it’s not Roki Sasaki, but this player has some the uniqueness of his game where the pitching lab and the organization’s development team will have a lot of fun.

Earlier this season, Milwaukee signed Grant Wolfram to an MLB contract. Now they have added the 26-year-old Elvin Rodriguez as he agreed to a one-year deal including a club option for 2026. Right-hander J.B. Bukauskas was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Bukauskas had already projected as a viable pitching prospect, but injuries narrow his time on the mound with the Brewers.

For the last year and a half, Elvin Rodriguez has been playing in Japan. Before heading overseas, the former international free agent who signed with the Los Angeles Angels as a teenager, made his huge league debut in 2022 with the Detroit Tigers and appeared in one game with the Tampa Bay Rays the following year. He operated exclusively out of the bullpen last year and posted an ERA of 1.74 in 88.0 innings pitched.

What makes Elvin Rodriguez unique?

On the mound, Elvin Rodriguez has a 94-95 mph fastball that he connects well with his slider. Its radiator is not only thrown out quickly, but also rises very much. This rising action comes from the spin he imparts to the ball, but also the angle from which he throws it.

While Elvin Rodriguez has a good chance of making the opening day roster, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Milwaukee apply him at various points during the season. He has two minor league options remaining, so the Brewers will have roster flexibility with him in each of the next two seasons if the club option is exercised next year.
