Over the past two days, both of Matt LaFleur’s Green Bay Packers coordinators interviewed for NFL head coaching positions. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was interviewed New York Jets on Fridaywhile the offensive coordinator had a conversation with Chicago Bears on Saturday.
Hafley, in his first season as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, provided “tremendous development” on the defensive side of the ball on a team that finished in the top 10 in points, yards and takeaways allowed. Hafley was previously the head coach at Boston College before leaving to become defensive coordinator at Green Bay.
Stenavich has experience as offensive line coach, game coordinator and offensive coordinator under LaFleur with the Packers. He has been on LaFleur’s staff since 2019 and the offensive coordinator since 2022.
It’s unclear where Hafley and Stenavich are as candidates. Both the Jets and Bears are going through a grueling interview process to find a fresh head coach.
The Jets finished 5-12 in 2024 and major changes could be coming. Former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 41 years senior and has an uncertain football future. New York may be headed towards a quarterback change and may want an offensive-minded head coach to lead the team.
The Bears also finished 5-12 after upsetting the Packers in the season finale. It’s possible the Bears will consider a coach from the Shanahan/McVay/LaFleur tree as a suitable fit for quarterback Caleb Williams, the first overall pick in 2024 who will enter a key sophomore season in 2025.
