The Wisconsin basketball team visited the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday after a seven-game winning streak. Meanwhile, UCLA, one of the Big Ten’s top teams earlier in the year, had lost five of its previous seven games. Unfortunately for the Wisconsin Badgers, two slow goals were not enough in an extremely close game and the UCLA team won 85-83. Battling against a top-ranked Wisconsin offense, UCLA posted its fifth-highest scoring total of the season, shooting 50% from the field.
As for Wisconsin, they also played high-level basketball on offense, shooting 25 of 49 from the field and making half of their three-pointers. However, according to one of the basketball analytical websites that apply computer vision and artificial intelligence, in Tuesday’s defeat, the Wisconsin team played beyond expectations. Moreover, UCLA’s offense exceeded expectations based on shots made, but not enough to result in an unlucky defeat for Wisconsin Basketball.
A profound explanation of Wisconsin Basketball’s brutal defeat
According to Jason Fray of Sports Illustrated:
Big win for UCLA over Wisconsin. The Badgers will have a tough time in March. Greg Gard’s team is characterized by great defense and solid attacking form. The Bruins added a significant win to their resume. Candidate Mara he earned more than the minutes many missed.
Wisconsin basketball was on a seven-game winning streak, and the UCLA Bruins made 28 free throws in an 85-83 home victory. UCLA shot 50% from the field but only 31% from deep. However, 21 of 28 free throws and ten offensive rebounds led to a one-possession victory. As for Wisconsin, the offense continued to put up elite numbers, shooting over 50% from the field and from deep. Unfortunately for the Badgers, they made 21 free throws while blocking only four offensive rebounds.
According to ShotQuality, a probability model that uses “computer vision and artificial intelligence to provide player location data to create the most predictable shot models in basketball,” UCLA won the contest 74-70 based on shots made. ShotQuality uses over 90 variables, including defensive location, to calculate the value of each shot taken. Star transfer John Tonje scored 24 points against a projected 12 for SQ. As for UCLA, they had three players who far exceeded expectations.
Wisconsin hosts Nebraska on Sunday
The Wisconsin basketball team will have four days off before hosting the tournament Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday. Nebraska is 12-6 and plays at home against the USC Trojans on Wednesday. Nebraska had lost four straight games before Wednesday’s loss and is in last place in the Big Ten standings.
Meanwhile, after Tuesday’s defeat, Wisconsin basketball is in fifth place in the conference standings and has a record of 15-4 on the season. Wisco is 5-3 in the Big Ten, and the Michigan State Spartans lead the league with a spotless 7-0 record.
