5 Wisconsin ski hills that will beat the crowds

Wisconsin is home to dozens of amazing ski hills, perfect for outdoor adventures with family and friends. While you may have heard of or been to some of the most popular resorts, the state also has plenty of smaller slopes that are great fun. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a quieter place to learn, or you want to try something fresh, these unique slopes offer winter fun for everyone in your group.

Mont du Lac – Superior Resort

The benefits of having a ski hill as far north as Superior are obvious: there is often more snow and cooler temperatures, keeping the terrain and trails in prime condition. The Mont du Lac Resort is located along the winding corridor of the St. River. Louis, which means you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views from almost every angle.

This resort has truly been designed with families in mind. With eight scenic trails and a 10-acre play area, Mont du Lac is a great place to show kids the ropes without overwhelming them with overly challenging trails or larger crowds. And with a two-lane kids-only tubing park, your group can spend the entire day enjoying winter fun. For the finale, enjoy a hot and delicious meal at Base Bar & Restaurant.

Tyrolean Basin – Mount Horeb

Located just 20 miles from Madison, Tyrol Basin is a centrally located gem offering all the thrills of the greatest hills. 21 slopes offer plenty of variety for snow lovers and experienced skiers alike.

If you’re looking to get some fresh air, head straight to one of Tyrol’s five popular off-road parks. Tyrol has a luxurious history with snowboarders and the off-road park scene. In fact, their massive half-pipe was the first in the Midwest at the time it was originally built, and their terrain parks have been providing adrenaline rushes ever since! If attempting daring stunts isn’t your style, keep your skis in the snow on one of the many more time-honored routes.

Camp 10 – Rhineland

The Camp 10 ski resort in the Rhineland offers great terrain and invigorating slopes, with a philosophy that puts families first. With particular attention to costs, Camp 10 boasts some of the most affordable rates for families in the state. The difficulty level of the routes is adapted to all skill levels: 40% of routes for beginners, 40% of routes for intermediate users and 20% of routes reserved for advanced users.

Plan your visit in January to take part in the World Championship Snowmobile Derby on nearby Eagle River for even more winter thrills.

Little Switzerland – Slinger

Little Switzerland Ski Area near West Bend is the perfect place to learn to ski or brush up on the basics. Set on 50 skiable acres, you and your crew will have plenty of room to acclimatize. The immense beginner area has both a cable tow and a conveyor belt to get you back up the hill much quicker.

If your little ones aren’t sure where to start, Little Switzerland offers lessons and instructional programs that exploit outdoor learning to make sure everyone is ready to shred. Once you feel confident in the snow with your family, you’ll have a blast exploring the other 18 trails for all difficulty levels.

Paul Bunyan Ski Jump – Lakewood

Calling itself the “biggest little hill” in the Midwest, Paul Bunyan Ski Hill recently reopened after a 25-year hiatus. The family hill in northeastern Wisconsin offers 72 acres of 50-foot slopes that provide invigorating runs for all skill levels. With exceptionally affordable day and night skiing, as well as a heated lodge, terrain park, and full-service restaurant, Paul Bunyan’s is the perfect place for a laid-back ski trip with family or friends.
