If you enjoy sliding down impressive hills and state-of-the-art terrain parks, it’s time to visit some of Wisconsin’s many slopes. Discover your next winter adventure at five great snowboard parks across the state.
Tyrolean Basin – Mount Horeb
Tyrol Basin caters to the needs of snowboarders, offering everything from lessons for beginners to competitions for more advanced snowboarders. And with six separate terrain parks for all levels, you and your crew can spend a whole day having fun here.
Tyrol Basin is also family-friendly, offering winter camps and private and group lessons for children. And don’t forget all the tree-lined slopes for skiers and snowboarders, as well as the tubing slope for even more snowy fun.
Granite Peak Ski Resort – Wausau
With over 35 booms and 15 jumps, Granite Peak Ski Area features the largest and most diverse terrain parks in the Midwest. The parks are overseen by a crew of “experienced shredders” who drive over the hills daily to ensure a velvety landing.
Ride as many of the 65(!) slopes as possible, and when your crew needs a break, gather at the Sundance Chalet or the Historic Chalet and Deck, which has six fire pits and a wide selection of craft beers. With so many trails and great amenities, your group will want to come back all winter long.
Cascade Mountain – Portage
Cascade Mountain near Portage offers four terrain parks designed for adventurous snowboarders and freeskiers. Cottontail Beginner/Progression Park has petite jumps and rails for those still learning the sport, while JJ Park offers such challenging features as one of America’s longest S-rails.
The longest trail in Cascade is called “Far Out” and is a beginner trail that takes you through old-growth forests, waterfalls, and scenic rock formations. It is just over a mile long and provides an unforgettable snowboarding or skiing experience.
Mount Wilmot – Wilmot
Originally opened in 1938, Wilmot Mountain has been a favorite winter sports destination for over eight decades. This is the perfect place to escape the city and spend time with family and friends on the Wisconsin-Illinois border.
The resort was recently purchased by Vail Resorts, which has undertaken a major renovation following the example of its sister resorts in the Rocky Mountains to the west. Improvements include a state-of-the-art beginner ski and snowboard center, four terrain parks with unique and creative features, and three recent four-person chairlifts to transport guests on 25 slopes.
Mount Christie-Bruce
Family-friendly (and family-owned!) ski area in the picturesque Blue Hills region of northwestern Wisconsin, Christie Mountain is perhaps one of the state’s best-kept secrets, offering skiing, snowboarding and tubing amid dramatic scenery. Three of the hill’s four terrain parks are serviced by cable tows for even faster fun.
The offer ranges from beginner parks, located just a few centimeters above the ground, to two intermediate parks with larger jumps, and finally to the snowboard park known as Rusty’s Revenge, where top riders challenge themselves to thrilling cliff jumps. Check the resort’s website for regular snowboard events, which attract talented shredders from all over the world.
