“Hungry” Kaukauna softball heads to Madison in search of a fourth straight state title

KAUKAUNA (NBC 26) — And they took off!

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts (26-0) traveled to Madison on Wednesday looking to cap off the 2024 season with a fourth straight league title.

They were given a hero’s send-off at school as they have had an incredible journey over the last few seasons, recording 107 straight wins and not losing since May 2021.

“They’re as hungry as any team we’ve had,” Ghosts head coach Tim Roehrig said. They want to win it, they want to go there and prove that they are in the same league as the previous teams. They don’t want to let these girls down, they don’t want to let the city down.

The goal of this year’s graduating class is to continue this winning tradition by ending their careers with a Ballon d’Or.

“We were fortunate to have every other senior class win the championship, so it would definitely be tough if we didn’t,” Ghosts senior shortstop Taryn Christopher said.

Speaking of hunger, before they start state play on Thursday, I’ll have one last team meal on Wednesday night, devouring a cheesecake factory.

“Everything on the menu, just try to break the bill,” Christopher said of what the team orders at the restaurant.

“For the next four to five days, we treat them like kings and queens and do everything we can to make it a truly special moment,” Roehrig said. “It’s amazing to see how much they can eat because they’re always trying to set a new record on the bill.”

The No. 1 Ghosts will host No. 8 Hamilton on Thursday at noon,
