The Milwaukee Breweries seemingly every year at the trade deadline, they look for hitters to lend a hand with their struggles against left-handed pitchers. Right-handed hitter Mark Canha joined the team last summer and later signed Josh Donaldson after he was released by the Yankees.
This year they once again rank dead last in several offensive stats against southpaws. With that in mind, a hitter with a career .455 slugging percentage was selected for assignment. Should the Brewers consider pursuing him?
How does the Milwaukee Brewers offense compare to left-handed pitchers?
At the time of this publication, this is where the Beer Crew is located, facing southpaws. Keep in mind that they have the second-fewest at-bats compared to lefties, but that sample size still includes 472 at-bats.
- .231 batting average – 21st
- .308 on-base percentage – 19th
- .375 hitting percentage – 18th
- .683 on base plus slugging percentage – 20
- 109 hits – 29
The Tampa Bay Rays recently DFAed a hitter with a career .455 slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers.
Harold Ramirez, 29, has been designated for assignment by the Rays. Over the past two seasons, his slash lines have been .300/.343/.404 and .313/.353/.460, but this year his offensive numbers have dropped to .268/.284/.305. As mentioned, he historically hits well for southpaws, and he still has a .310 batting average in those matchups this year.
Harold Ramirez has confined defensive options and is primarily a designated hitter.
Over the course of his MLB career, Ramirez has seen defensive reps at the corner outfield positions as well as first base. However, he is not a mighty defender and is primarily a designated hitter. While the Brewers could exploit the right-handed hitting outfielder, his defensive limitations may ultimately make Milwaukee wonder whether they should pursue him or not.
Harold Ramirez is currently on leave. The Rays could consider trading him for another player, or teams could file a claim on his behalf that would make them responsible for his $3.8 million salary. If he agrees to a waiver, he can decline a minor-league assignment, at which time he would become a free agent.
