October is National Popcorn Month and we at Gather Wisconsin are excited to celebrate this savory recipe courtesy of Wisconsin Cheese. Before we dive into this basic recipe to enhance your upcoming movie night, let’s learn a little more about this great snack.
Long story
The origins of these delightful grains date back thousands of years. The oldest ears found were believed to be around 4,000 years venerable. These flasks were discovered in Bat Cave in western New Mexico in the tardy 1940s.
The history of popcorn continues with the 16th century Aztec Indians, who are believed to have used it in various ceremonies and celebrations. In fact, grains that are over 1,000 years venerable have been found in cemeteries in northern Chile.
As agricultural practices advanced in the 19th century with the employ of the moldboard plow, the planting of corn varieties, including popcorn, expanded throughout the United States.
Used for years
Considered a established snack today, popcorn has had various purposes and roles over time. Consumers of the tardy 19th and early 20th centuries even ate it for breakfast the same way we eat cereal today – in a bowl with milk.
During the Great Depression, popcorn was a common street food that struggling families could afford. Sales actually grew during the Great Depression when it was released in theaters, creating a win-win, low-cost snack for movie patrons and theater owners alike.
Popcorn has also long been integrated into the holiday season. For decades, it has been used for inexpensive holiday decorations, gifts and food items such as popcorn ball.

It eventually became a household staple with the introduction of microwave popcorn in the 1980s. Convenience combined with nostalgia has made popcorn a household standard for decades. Gourmet companies like Rural Route 1 Popcorn here in Wisconsin, we’ve introduced up-to-date flavors and concoctions into the mix that continue to delight a variety of palettes.
